NV04 Fluorite
Bethel Level, Minerva #1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock Dist., Hardin Co., Illinois, USA
9.0x 7.6x 3.0 cm

Repaired

A specimen of yellow fluorite with a purple outer later, with a dusting of small white calcite crystals, from the classic (and now closed) Illinois fluorspar district.

This piece needs to be displayed in a somewhat reclined position to be fully appreciated (as in the images directly to the right and directly below this description.)  Viewed from head on (bottom right image, and also the position for which the dimensions are given) it's a bit more difficult to appreciate the distinctness of the crystals, and the purple edges are not visible.

The surfaces are particularly smooth and glassy on this piece-- not the usual etched surfaces that are typically seen on lesser pieces.

Collected in the 1970's.  Repaired.
