AMD02 Fluorite
Minerva Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA
9.7x 9.2x 5.2 cm
$500

A yellow fluorite with calcite, from southern Illinois. There is some damage in a. couple spots, but displays well!

AMD03 Fluorite on Sphalerite
Minerva Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA
8.5x 7.3x 5.4 cm
$695

Zoned yellow, purple, and blue fluorite on a sphalerite matrix. This fluorite is etched on all sides. This is among the most sought after of color combinations from this area.

AMD04 Fluorite
Pugh Quarry, Weston, Wood Co., Ohio, United States
12.2x 5.0x 3.1 cm
$700

You might see this and think, "is he crazy?" but no, I am not. This is an exceedingly rare fluorite specimen from the Pugh Quarry, and a particularly rich and sizable one, at that.  While never common there, this piece was collected decades ago. Today, you pretty much only see the orange calcite from this locality, once in a while you may encounter a barite or a celestite, but these are very very hard to find!

AMD05 Fluorite
Thompson-Mccully Quarry, Newport, Monroe Co., Michigan, United States
15.3x 8.1x 5.6 cm
$485

A group of tan fluorite crystals in a vug.  This piece pretty much contains the entire exposed half of the pocket, as it was unearthed by the field collector, though the matrix is repaired and there are a few scuffs on the crystals.

With that said, this is an exceptionally rare Michigan fluorite specimen-- you see plenty of fluorite from neighboring Ohio, occasional pieces from Indiana, and even from Ontario, near the border.... but Michigan fluorite just isn't common.

AMD06 Fluorite
Thompson-Mccully Quarry, Newport, Monroe Co., Michigan, United States
7.1x 5.5x 3.4 cm
$585

An exceptionally rare Michigan fluorite specimen-- you see plenty of fluorite from neighboring Ohio, occasional pieces from Indiana, and even from Ontario, near the border.... but Michigan fluorite just isn't common.  This piece has multiple crystals nicely arranged on their matrix.

AMD06A Calcite
Red Phantom Pocket, Fletcher Mine, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds Co., Missouri, United States
7.5x 6.8x 3.9 cm
$395

A beautiful specimen of calcite on matrix, from the "Red Phantom Pocket" discovered around 1997-1998. Most of the ones that came out did not have matrix.  There are some chips, but it displays as shown

AMD07 Calcite
Anderson, Indiana, United States
12.5x 5.0x 5.9 cm
$300

A great example of iridescent calcite from Anderson, Indiana.

AMD08 Sulfur ps. (included in?) Celestite
Maybee, Monroe Co., Michigan, United States
13.4x 9.2x 7.1 cm
$425

A very unusual specimen from the Maybe Quarry, in Michigan. Although somewhat obscure outside the American Midwest, this locality has produced some of the best American sulfur specimens known.  Most however, are just sulfur crystals. The shape of the crystal is not correct for sulfur-- it looks a lot more like a celestite, but it is obviously the wrong color. It also has a slightly melted appearance near the top-- so this is likely a pseudomorph. Or at the very least, a heavily included celestite crystal.

AMD09 Fluorite
Blufton, Ohio, United States
16.6x 8.0x 8.9 cm
$465

A great example of fluorite in a vug, from Blufton, Ohio. This piece hosts the entire vug (or at least half of it) in a larger piece of sedimentary rock-- it gives a good idea of how this stuff is found. This is one of the more obscure Midwestern fluorite localities.

AMD10 Fluorite
Blufton, Ohio, United States
3.2x 1.5x 1.0 cm
$135

A beautiful thumbnail sized fluorite from Blufton, Ohio.  This piece hosts a few very transparent crystals, with thin purple overgrowths. This is a rather obscure Midwestern fluorite locality!

AMD11 Calcite
Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada
15.9x 7.2x 5.8 cm
$395

A beautiful calcite from Ontario, this one has a deep orange color and is situated nicely in a vug, accompanied by smaller crystals. Collected in 1992.

AMD12 Galena
Sweetwater Mine, Reynolds Co., Viburnum Trend Dist., Missouri, United States
11.5x 6.5x 6.0 cm
$365

A very nice older example of galena from the Sweetwater Mine. This piece has a very lustrous cubic crystal, accompanied by numerous octahedral crystals.

AMD13 Calcite
Red Phantom Pocket, Fletcher Mine, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds Co., Missouri, United States
9.0x 4.5x 3.0 cm
$285

A beautiful specimen of calcite, from the "Red Phantom Pocket" discovered around 1997-1998.

AMD14 Fluorite
Rosiclare, Cave-in-Rock Dist., Illinois
10.0x 9.3x 6.3 cm
$435

A nice example of yellow and purple fluorite from Southern Illinois.  This one has hundreds of cubes, and a dusty appearance. Although not accompanied by any specific label, there was a journal entry dating this piece to at least 1974.

AMD15 Calcite
France Stone Co. Quarry, Sylvania, Lucas Co., Ohio, United States
13.2x 9.1x 9.0 cm
$285

An old calcite from Ohio.  There are a number of "France Stone Co." quarries across the Midwest, this one comes from their old operation in Sylvania. This piece has a label dating it to at least 1973.

AMD16 Fluorite
Danville, Kentucky
10.0x 7.8x 2.9 cm
$295

An old fluorite specimen from Kentucky.  This one is particularly rich, and has larger crystals than most.

AMD17 Fluorite on Calcite
Pint's Quarry, Raymond, Black Hawk Quarry, Iowa, United States
12.7x 4.9x 5.6 cm
$265

A particularly good example of brown fluorite on a calcite covered matrix, from Pint's quarry, in Iowa.

AMD18 Calcite
Rensselaer Stone Co Quarry, Pleasant Ridge, Indiana, United States
7.4x 4.2x 2.0 cm
$285

A very beautiful and unusual calcite from the Rensselaer Quarry, in Indiana. Usually the crystals tens to be somewhat elongated, this one had a much more flower-like arrangement, making it both unique and quite pretty, especially for a locality that usually produces somewhat ugly calcites specimens.

AMD19 Fluorite
Minerva Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA
6.4 4.9x 2.8 cm
$335

A lustrous yellow fluorite with a thin, outer layer of blue-purple color, from Southern Illinois

AMD20 Galena with Sphalerite
Tri-State Lead Zinc District, Oklahoma-Kansas-Missouri Border Area, United States
6.3x 4.3x 4.8 cm
$145

An old galena specimen with tiny "ruby jack" sphalerite crystals, from the Tri-State district.  The mines were spread out around the Oklahoma-Kansas-Missouri border region, and some even connected underground. The last mine closed in 1967.  This piece has a very sculptural galena crystal, associated with small ruby jack sphalerite crystals coating a thin matrix plate.

AMD21 Calcite
Maumee Stoneco Quarry, Maumee, Ohio, United States
11.2x 7.5x 8.7 cm
$200

A very ugly and very old calcite specimen from Ohio. But it is so unusual I just had to post it.  It was one of two obtained together, it has a label stating that it was collected in 1960.

AMD22 Calcite
Maumee Stoneco Quarry, Maumee, Ohio, United States
7.2x 6.1x 5.8 cm
$165

A very ugly and very old calcite specimen from Ohio. But it is so unusual I just had to post it. Oddly, there seems to be some rock in the center of it, but I'm not sure how far into the crystal this extends. It was one of two obtained together.  Collected in 1960.

AMD23 Chamosite ps. Almandine Garnet
Michigamme Mine, Marquette Iron Range, Iron Co., Michigan, United States
9.3x 8.0x 4.5 cm
$385

An excellent example of this weird pseudomorph from Northern Michigan. This piece hosts two crystals, one actually quite sizable, nicely positioned on their matrix. Having lived both in the Midwest generally, and in Michigan specifically for many years, I can say that this quality is not common!

AMD24 Chamosite ps. Almandine Garnet
Michigamme Mine, Marquette Iron Range, Iron Co., Michigan, United States
7.9x 4.4x 3.1 cm
$275

A very good example of chamosite after garnet, on matrix. The main crystal is very well exposed, and the specimen can be displayed from a couple different angles.

AMD25 Celestite
Maybee, Monroe Co., Michigan, United States
9.0x 7.1x 1.9 cm
$120

A beautiful plate of light blue celestite crystals, from Maybee, Michigan.

AMD26 Calcite
Auglaize Quarry, Junction, Paulding Co., Ohio, United States
7.5x 6.5x 2.6 cm
$165

A beautifully arranged calcite specimen from Auglaize.  This one seems to have some sort of coating, but I can't get it off!

AMD27 Celestite
Sylvania, Ohio, United States
13.2 9.5x 3.5 cm
$155

A pretty example of rather saturated (for the American midwest) and gemmy celestite crystals on matrix, from Ohio.

AMD28 Calcite
Berry Materials Corp. Quarry (North Vernon Plant), North Vernon, Jennings Co., Indiana
5.1x 3.3x 3.2 cm
$200

A nice example of calcite from the Berry Materials Quarry, in Indiana.  This one is a bit unusual for two reasons-- the crystal is slightly elongated (they are usually more spherical/ball like) and it has marcasite inclusions. It also has more matrix than most of these.

AMD29 Calcite
Berry Materials Corp. Quarry (North Vernon Plant), North Vernon, Jennings Co., Indiana
3.5x 3.3x 2.5 cm
$135

A cluster of honey colored calcite crystals, showing the typical rounded habit that this locality is known for. There are a couple minor rubs visible from some angles.

AMD30 Calcite
Irving Materials Quarry, Anderson, Madison Co., Indiana, United States
3.6x 2.2x 1.7 cm
$165

A nice V twin of calcite from the Irving Materials Quarry.  There is a cleave on one of the faces of the termination, its a bit hard to see directly from the front or back, but you can see it from the side or top.

AMD31 Calcite
Rockwood Quarry, Detroit Metro Area, Wayne Co., Michigan
10.5x 8.0x 5.6 cm
$165

A calcite specimen from the Detroit Metro area-- the Rockwood Quarry is located on the southern edge of the city.

AMD32 Calcite with Fluorite
Marblehead Quarry, Ottawa County, Ohio, United States
6.7x 5.4x 4.5 cm
$125

An unusual specimen from Ohio-- this piece consists of a cluster of calcite crystals, studded with tiny purple fluorite crystals.  A couple even seem to be included in the calcite.

AMD33 Calcite
Sweetwater Mine, Reynolds Co., Viburnum Trend Dist., Missouri, United States
13.3x 6.2x 9.6 cm
$165

A nice calcite crystal perched dramatically on matrix. There are scuffs on the side crystals, the main crystal is perfect. Sawn base.

AMD34 Celestite
Maybee, Monroe Co., Michigan, United States
9.7x 5.1x 3.5 cm
$100

A nice example of celestite on matrix, from Maybee Michigan.  I liked this one because you could see the outline of the entire pocket-- usually you find plates, or portions of the internal walls of larger pockets.

AMD35 Chamosite ps. Almandine Garnet
Michigamme Mine, Marquette Iron Range, Iron Co., Michigan, United States
6.4x 5.8x 3.0 cm
$235

A great example of this weird pseudomorph from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This one hosts two crystals, nicely positioned on their matrix.

AMD36 Chamosite ps. Almandine Garnet
Michigamme Mine, Marquette Iron Range, Iron Co., Michigan, United States
6.2x 5.2x 3.4 cm
$140

A well exposed pseudomorph of chamosite after garnet, on matrix.

AMD38 Chamosite ps. Almandine Garnet
Michigamme Mine, Marquette Iron Range, Iron Co., Michigan, United States
3.3x 2.1x 2.0 cm
$120

An exceptionally sharp pseudomorph of chamosite after garnet, from Michigan's upper Peninsula.

AMD39 Calcite
Sweetwater Mine, Reynolds Co., Viburnum Trend Dist., Missouri, United States
5.9x 4.0x 5.4 cm
$120

A beautful example of calcite from the Sweetwater Mine, with two lustrous crystals on matrix.

AMD40 Calcite an Celestite
Maybee, Monroe Co., Michigan, United States
20.0x 10.8x 6.3 cm
$185

A large cabinet specimen, hosting a vug of calcite and celestite. Celestite is quite common from this location, but calcite is somewhat harder to find!

AMD41 Calcite
Vulcan Quarry, Racine, Wisconsin, United STates
10.8x 6.6x 7.6 cm
$185

A very well arranged example of calcite from Wisconsin-- you may notice that a bunch of the quarry names tend to have the words "Vulcan, Stoneco, France," thetas because many of them are operated by the same few companies. This one comes from one of their Wisconsin operations.  There is some damage.

AMD42 Fluorite
LaFarge Quarry, Dundas, Ontario, Canada
5.1x 4.3x 3.3 cm
$85

A nice example of brown fluorite from Canada-- this looks nearly identical to the material from Ohio, only it isn't...

AMD43 Barite
Pugh Quarry, Weston, Wood Co., Ohio, United States
6.8x 5.0x 4.8 cm
$100

An ugly rock for the Midwest connoisseur, this is a barite from Pugh. It has damage, but is very well crystalized for the location.  This is probably one of the better known quarries in the Midwest, but pretty much all you see form here is calcite.

AMD44 Fluorite with Calcite
Minerva Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA
9.9x 9.4x 6.5 cm
$400

A nice example of yellow fluorite with blue/purple edges, from southern Illinois. Some contacting on the side (see the last picture.)
